- Aluminum has been widely studied as a lightweight material to reduce the weight of automotive components. Warm stamping of aluminum, which involves forming at elevated temperatures, is a promising technique for manufacturing of complex shapes such as shock absorber housing panel (SAHP) due to aluminum's low formability at room temperature. However, maintaining high temperatures during the warm stamping process is difficult because of significant heat loss during the transfer of the heated blank and the stamping process for parts with deep drawing depths like the SAHP. To solve this problem, a combined cold and warm stamping process was investigated for the manufacturing of SAHP in this study. In this approach, the preform of the SAHP was first stamped using cold stamping, followed by final stamping through warm stamping. The potential preform was designed to avoid defects such as wrinkles and fractures through FE-analysis of the cold stamping process with different BHFs and punch strokes. Subsequently, warm stamping of the SAHP was simulated using the potential preform to investigate whether defects such as wrinkles or fractures occurred in the final part, and whether the trimming allowance satisfied with the SAHP specifications. This procedure was repeated until the warm stamping of the SAHP using the preform designed in the cold stamping was successful. As a result, the optimal process condition and the preform design were determined for the manufacturing of SAHP.
